Intake: From Caddo Parish Animal Services. I first met Darcy August 29, 2016 while volunteering at the shelter. She became a Rockers Rescue member on December 3, 2016. Will explain in History section.
Vetting: Full exams. Blood panel done. Up to date on shots. Darcy has had enucleation surgery (eye removal). Received 2 days of iv fluids and meds when initially taken from shelter. Vets say she is spayed. Heartworm tested and was positive so she is being slow treated (you may read about this below under Heartworm section). On monthly Heartguard for heartworm prevention. Was de-wormed with panacur. Put on bravecto for flea/tick prevention (pill lasts 3 months). Microchipped under the rescue (explained below). Has a couple little lumps and skin tags, all accessed by the vet and of no concern. Welp, I think we covered it all! All of our animals get ALL that they need. :)
History: On August 29, 2016 I was volunteering at the shelter. (Its a high kill shelter sadly as our community if awful when it comes to pets.) We were walking through stray hold...and then we saw her. A dog laying on the kennel floor with her head fully wrapped up in something white. She could not even see as it was covering both of her eyes. She laid on the floor, scared to move. Apparently it was a homemade "fix". The vets unravelled to discover the dogs left eye was protruding from her head. Then we got the news she was a senior and heartworm positive. Decisions had to be made and fast on if Darcy would be euthanized or given a chance.... so we sent out a plea for donations. And they came. Darcy's life was spared. (We have the picture from this day but will only show it to those that wish to see.)
Myself and the lady that volunteers to do our Instagram page, drove Darcy to the vet where she received the care she needed. That sweet lady ended up fostering Darcy to keep her from going back to the shelter. Darcy recovered and was doing GREAT. An amazing dog! She was what we could call famous on a bit on a senior dog facebook page and she had lots of lovely homes lined up. Sadly, none were able to come through for some reason or another. None even got to meet her! One day I realized... Darcy was safe with her foster, all she needed now was a loving home. WE would be her rescue. We have been there with Darcy since the beginning ... so we would love to be there for her from now on. This amazing dog has been looking for her place in the world for too long...and we will help her find it.
Personality: LAID BACK! Calm... friendly... sweet... you name it! At events I have witnessed this dog be standing around then just mosey on over to a hand and gently nudge or put her head beside it! She does it all the time so its a normal tendency for her! It is the most adorable thing. She just genuinely enjoys people. She is not hyper...at all. Once this dog felt blankets under her fur I don't think she's ever been the same. Princess is what we could call her! She just wants to snuggle up on a cozy spot and relax! She's potty trained and doesn't even have to be kenneled when left alone. She enjoys lounging in an open kennel type bed, on the couch, on the bed, wherever there is a blanket and pillows. She's great with other dogs and children, non reactive to cats too. Easy to bathe and trim nails.
Does not care for toys but does like treats. Her favorite local place for treats is Lucy's Barkery off of Line Ave! Likes to be in the same room as you. May follow you around the house. If you are sitting on the couch then eventually she will nessle her nose to your lap and nudge for you to pet her. She's getting more brave about jumping on the couch but generally needs to be helped up onto things. A home with little to no stairs is best for her. She use to be real creaky but since receiving good care the creaks are gone! We do try to limit any large amounts of exertion for her though...she's a lounge dog! Doesn't bark or destroy things. Eats solid food just fine. All in all... this dog is amazing. She just wants a place to be loved and relax!
About Microchip: Our animals are microchipped under the rescue. By having the animals microchipped under us it provides us with a definite option of the animal being safe if found. If the pet ever goes missing you can let us know as well so we may help find them. If we ever are called on the animal being found we will try our best for 2 weeks to get in contact with the owners (as you should also be trying to get in contact with us) and if the owner is not found after 2 weeks the animal is legally ours again via our contract. This is a GREAT safety precaution for loving families. It means you will have an awesome caring team devoted to reuniting you with your baby. We ourselves have found microchipped dogs that have been rehomed and ended up in shelters on a euthanasia list. We take this very seriously as we never want that to happen to any of our animals. We also require first option of taking an animal back if the home does not work out. You can consider us a forever family for the pets adopted from us.
Heartworms
***** If a dog has heartworms do not let it deter you from adoption. We place our heartworm positive dogs on a month of doxycycline twice a day and heartworm prevention. Some even get the doxy paired with prednisone. The doxy kills any baby heartworms and weakens the adults until they die of age. This is gentler on the pet than full blown treatment and is best for our animals going through foster care. Older dogs ESPECIALLY need to do the slow method. Send any questions on the matter! -----
Darcy is on monthly Heartguard for heartworm prevention and is getting 1 month of doxy meds. Once this month is up she just needs to continue heartworm prevention like any other dog.
Adoption: Must have a vet reference when filling out one of our applications. Monthly h eartworm prevention is very important to us and your pet so adopters need to be financially prepared to cover that expense. If you do not know about heartworms we would love to tell you about them. We all have to learn! Any inquiries on adoption please feel free to message us. All information stated above is the the best of our knowledge for for as long as we have known this pet.
Adoption fee of $150. (this includes microchipping expense)
First email us to let us know you are filling out an application as sometimes the site glitches and it will not send, rockersrescue@gmail.com then go to the following site to fill out the application. Include as much information as you can...we like to get to know our possible adopters!
