Lucas! Available for Adoption!

  • Male round 4 years old
  • Weighs about 75 pounds.
  • Gorgeous boy with a cute bobbed tail.
  • More relaxed type personality. He sort of just goes with the flow.
  • Lucas is an all-around good boy. He is great with adults and children, other dogs and cats as well.

History: Lucas was saved THE DAY before he was set to be euthanized back in April. He was at Caddo Parish Animal Shelter.  He was saved by another rescue! It turned out that Lucas had bad heartworms and he was unable to travel north to his rescue due to his heartworm status although he is being treated. He needs to find a home local to around Shreveport, Louisiana or nearby places. Due to this, our rescue asked to help network him here in the south. He is an AMAZING boy.   He is very fortunate to be saved and survive!  (see medical info below)

MEDICAL: Lucas was very ill when rescued. He is also positive for Heartworm Disease. He was to be euthanized on the very day he was saved from the shelter. Once rescued, he soon became very ill and although he recovered, it took him a long time to get strong. The Heartworm Disease made him very weak and because he had such a hard time, the vets have advised to just continue on the "slow kill" method of heartworm treatment. It is not an expensive treatment, but he will need his normal regular Heartworm preventative EVERY MONTH for life. As ALL dogs should be getting anyway. In the next year or so, he will likely be cleared of the heartworms. He shows NO signs anymore of them physically. He runs, plays and acts as well as any other dog. But it’s imperative that he continue on heartworm prevention to keep killing off the worms. (vetting info below)

Personality:

  • Lucas gets along with other dogs, and likes to wrestle when he is feeling energetic. He is excellent with children and puppies as he is very tolerant and has a calm temperament. He is very good with cats because he is leery of them and leaves them alone (as most cats prefer).

  • Lucas LOVES walks! His adorable nub tail will wag like crazy when he sees you pick up the leash. He likes to sniff around the neighborhood or run in the dog park. Despite his size, Lucas doesn't pull on the leash!
  • Lucas is not very vocal. Occasionally he will bark at unusual objects (balloons) and he has a soft howl he uses only when he hears the train go by. He is the perfect dog if you live in an apartment or a quiet neighborhood.
  •  Lucas is kennel trained but does good out of the kennel so he's been allowed to relax in the home when alone. He does enjoy toys! Just watch any shoes laying around. Better to just stash those away haha.
  • Lucas would be an excellent fit for many different homes. He will be an excellent family dog, because he is so sweet with children. While he is good with other dogs and cats, Lucas loves to be the center of attention and spend as much time as possible with his people. It would be most suitable for Lucas to be with a family who is home a lot, or who can take him to work (he is an excellent office dog)!
  • Lucas is a very loving boy. He has been through a lot in his life. Despite his young age, he is an old soul. He can be hesitant when he first meets people, but it doesn't take long for him to be snuggled up next to you looking for pets. He is low energy and enjoys cuddling up under the coffee table or on the couch. Lucas is excellent at spooning- big or little! He will often nuzzle you for more affection, and he especially loves head and belly scratches. He could lay in bed all day with his family!
  • When Lucas was rescued he was emaciated. As a result he started out being protective of his food. He is now good with the other pet in the home as far as food goes but it is recommended he be fed separately in his new home until adjusted. He is fine with people around the food though, just be sure he has time to adjust to a new fur sibling around it.

Vetting: Lucas is neutered, up to date on vaccines and rabies shot, microchipped, medicated for past illnesses. Also had some teeth removed as xrays showed he had been shot in the face in the past! He is all better now.   ----- He needs to continue his heartworm prevention monthly like every other dog. He received a month of doxy pills to help kill of the baby heartworms and weaken the adults. Keeping him on the prevention until they die from age is his best route. This is called "slow heartworm treatment" Lucas is not a viable candidate for the fast treatment. The worms should die off within the next year or two according to the vets. Again, he has no outward signs that he even has them. Just ask if you have any questions.
