Dino (like Dinosaur) Male. Intake date: 12/11/23

Breed:  Rat Terrier

DOB: ~11/13/23

Intake weight: 3.3lbs

Recent weight (1/1/23):  5.5lbs.

Size potential:  Mother was approximately 15 pounds – father unknown – potential size:  15-20 pounds (THIS IS AN ESTIMATE – give or take!) Keep in mind Rat Terriers can be known for being high energy, good jumpers, barky, and even hunters.

Our friends Ninnas Road to Rescue were contacted about a situation in a rural town/parish where there is no animal control, no rescue groups… no anything to help animals in need.  The owner is elderly and a former breeder of Rat Terriers.  They went on the property to find Rat Terriers running loose, some locked up in a carport utility room, some in kennels out back and some on the back porch - loose, including three small puppies (Goobertown, Possum Grape and Dino (that came under us).  Mind you, it is December and cold.  They grabbed the three puppies and some adults and reached out to other groups to help.  All of the dogs have been removed with the exception of a couple that are being spayed/neutered and remaining.  What an overwhelming nightmare.  They were shown the mother dog and she was roughly 15 pounds from what they could see.  She was semi-feral so they couldn’t get their hands on her.   She is one of the dogs remaining on the property.  The mother is a Rat Terrier but the father is unknown.  As for the males on the property, there were quite a few.  Some were little, some were bigger so the potential adult size of the pups is an estimate.   When they came to us initially, they were weak and cold and filled with roundworms and fleas. They are all healthy happy and playful now!

About Dino: Very playful baby! Sleeps in puppy play pen at night and sleeps through the night. Very mouthy/bitey puppy as most are. Loves playing with other dogs. Loves bouncing and running around. Toys are the world.

Vetting with Puppies: Puppies get 3-4 vaccine sets to protect them. They get a set every few weeks. These are VERY important. Pup will have started puppy vaccines and have had (2 sets) before being allowed to leave us. The adopter will be required to have remaining sets done per their vet. Will need monthly heartworm prevention when your vet is ready to start it. Has been dewormed. Will be microchipped via Petlink and our rescue has already paid the lifetime fee. When it comes to his neuter, we will schedule that for you at Robinsons Rescue. The rescue will cover those fees unless the adopter wishes to do the neuter at their own vet clinic or if they wish to help us pay the fee. It will be required to be done by 6 months of age. We usually do the rabies vaccine at the time of spay/neuter as well.

Puppies: Puppies have sharp teeth, they bite, scratch, bark, and potty. Adopter MUST be prepared for any puppy to do this. We do not take puppy adoption lightly.... you are their forever home. It is YOUR job to teach them potty training, to socialize them with other pets and people, and to integrate them properly into your household. This should be done in a kind and proper manner. You are the one that will mold them.  Protecting from disease: Puppies get multiple vaccine sets to fully protect them. We do not let puppies leave us until they've had 2 sets of vaccines. They are still not fully protected at that point and will require the other sets as they grow. Due to this, your puppy needs to AVOID high traffic areas with other dogs or places other pets have been. No putting them on grass in new places, no putting them on floors in pet stores or at the vet clinic. No letting other puppies near them. Don't even let another puppies owners pet them in public. You want to treat them like a baby avoiding germs you cannot see. Research parvo, as it is an invisible killer of puppies. Attaching to even shoes and clothing. It lasts in the ground for years as well. You want to keep your puppy safe while they work on getting all of their vaccine boosters to help protect them.  Finances: You will need to be able to afford a puppies future vet care which includes more rounds of puppy vaccines, monthly heartworm prevention, flea/tick prevention, accidents that may arise, food, leash, toys, collars as they grow,  etc. Dogs in general are costly when you are properly taking care of them.  Requires: Secure fenced yard and to only be outside when monitored. (See small dog section above)  Excellent vet history. Owner needs to be prepared for a puppy! Puppies are also a tripping hazard for seniors or anyone with mobility issues. Young children can be hurt by a puppies sharp teeth when playing. Owner needs to be prepared to have puppy for the duration of his/her life (which can be over 10 years) Prepared for SMALL dog with small bladder, yes that means being ready for potty training, accidents, etc. Please consider all of the above before applying for a puppy. If you are GAME for the lifetime commitment, we welcome your application.
